PEÑA

Gabriel should be nervous, scared, or freaking out right now – but he almost felt the spell wrapping around him, welcoming it, and helpless to fight it.

The day was perfect. The sun was lower on the horizon, and the temperatures were perfect. Robin looked like an angel wrapped in that pink, plaid tartan he’d picked up for her at the airport… and he couldn’t stop smiling.

She glowed with happiness, and he never anticipated how fierce his attraction would be towards Robin after all this time. He figured he would surprise her at work, say ‘hello’, hug her, and invite her out for coffee… but nope.

That most certainly didn’t happen.

This morning he took one look at her, marveling in that soft, gentle way about her that was so incredibly feminine, knowing her mind like the back of his hand… and decided to remedy that ‘wrong’ that echoed in his mind like a loud record scratch when she’d tried to kiss him.

He’d crossed the barrier between them, drew her into his arms, and surrendered to what was in his soul… not what was screaming in his head.

… And that kiss?

My goodness, when she started kissing him back?

He was done.

Nope, it was time to give into that other voice that spoke up the first time he saw her email that was from Team Peña… that voice that had gone silent within him, being drowned out by others. He wanted to get to know this woman all over again, take his time, date her, learn to love her, and maybe this was just another phase of him growing up.

They walked slowly in the trees, as his eyes took in everything with almost a childlike-aura. There were colorful banners hanging from the trees, and tents everywhere. The smell of something wafted in the air and he was pretty sure it was smoked turkey legs or some sort of barbecue.

People were walking around with steins of beer, wearing kilts, fairy wings, and women had elaborately braided masterpieces created with their hair. Some of the children were running around with wands, streaming ribbon behind them as they darted through the crowds wildly, their faces alit with joy and covered in pink, blue, and green glitter paint.

“This is… incredible,” Robin was saying as she stared up at the trees where the banners were moving slowly in the breeze. “It’s like we are in another world.”

“Just us,” he agreed. “Reality is far behind us, and we can be free to be ourselves for a little bit.”

… Only to have her turn and look at him curiously, holding onto his hand, almost as if she was afraid that they would break this connection between them.

“I want you to always be yourself with me – because that is who I treasure and enjoy talking to. Not some soldier or some guy who is acting how he thinks I want him to behave like… but my friend with whom I’ve always had a bond, I think.”

Just as he was about to say
